Music Lesson & Ensemble Expectations

Instrumental music instruction is an important and integral part of the music program at GAMP.  While playing an instrument is not required of every student at GAMP, every student will have experiences and opportunities with instrumental music.  Additionally, instrumental instruction and ensemble opportunities exist for our students on a wide variety of orchestra and band instruments.

Students whose GAMP audition includes instrumental performance will be considered candidates for instrumental instruction and ensembles.  Students who complete an instrumental audition for GAMP are admitted must adhere to the following:

  • Students are expected to continue instrumental study throughout their time at GAMP.
  • Middle School: At a minimum, middle school students will be expected to continue instrumental studies for one year.  If there is a serious issue with instrumental study at the end of the first year, the student and parent can discuss other options with the instrumental music teacher.
  • High School: if a student auditions to come to GAMP on an instrument, and were accepted on that instrument, they must continue on that instrument through high school.

Instrumental students will be assigned to an ensemble based on their playing level at the time of their admission.  If a student does not meet the minimum ability level to perform in an ensemble, they will not be assigned to an ensemble but will continue with lessons, until such time as they can join an ensemble.

Middle School Only: Students who fail to meet minimum expected competency in their instrumental audition, or students who do not play an instrument, cannot be guaranteed instruction on their first choice of instrument upon entering GAMP.  Every effort will be made to find a suitable instrument for all students interested in participating in instrumental music.
